Easy Posing Tips for People Who Hate Having Their Photo Taken
If you feel awkward, stiff, or unnatural in front of a camera — these practical posing tips will change how your photos come out. No experience required.
Easy Posing Tips for People Who Hate Having Their Photo Taken
Almost everyone says some version of this: "I'm not photogenic" or "I hate photos of myself." In 90% of cases, the issue isn't how you look — it's how you were directed (or not directed) in previous sessions. Here's what actually helps.
Move, Don't Pose
Static poses look static. Natural movement — walking toward the camera, laughing at something real, reaching for your partner's hand — produces the images people actually love. Your photographer should be giving you things to do, not just places to stand.
The Chin Trick
Bring your chin slightly forward and down. This is counterintuitive — it feels like you're making a double chin, but it actually elongates the neck and tightens the jawline in photos. Test it in a mirror once. You'll understand immediately.
Don't Smile on Command
"Say cheese" is the enemy of good portraits. Instead, think of something that actually makes you laugh. Talk to your photographer about something real. React to something happening in the environment. Forced smiles are identifiable at a glance — real ones aren't.
Relax Your Hands
More people look stiff because of their hands than any other reason. Lightly hold something (a jacket lapel, a bouquet stem, your partner's hand), put hands in pockets with thumbs out, or let them hang naturally slightly away from your body. The worst thing is hands pinned at your sides.
Trust Your Photographer's Direction
A good photographer will see what you can't see and tell you what's working. When they adjust your position, go with it. When they say "that's it, don't move" — that's a real instruction. The best portrait sessions feel collaborative, not performative.
