How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Coverage Do You Actually Need?

6 hours, 8 hours, 10 hours — what's the right amount of wedding photography coverage? Here's a real breakdown based on your timeline and priorities.

How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Coverage Do You Actually Need?

One of the most common questions during wedding planning: how many hours do I need? Here's a practical breakdown.

The Short Answer

Most weddings need 8 hours of coverage. That gets you: getting ready, first look (optional), ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour, and the first 2 hours of reception.

6-Hour Coverage: Best For

Micro-weddings and elopements. No big reception. Small guest count. You're prioritizing ceremony and portraits over reception dancing. If your timeline is tight and your guest list is under 40, 6 hours is often enough.

8-Hour Coverage: The Standard

This is the right choice for 80% of weddings. A typical 8-hour day looks like: 2 hours getting ready → 30-minute first look → 1-hour ceremony → 30-minute cocktail hour portraits → 1-hour reception entrance, toasts, first dances → 2.5 hours of reception dancing and candids → 30-minute sunset portraits.

10-Hour Coverage: When You Need It

Two separate venues. Rehearsal dinner coverage. Ceremony and reception in different locations requiring significant travel time. You want reception coverage until the last dance. Larger wedding parties that need more portrait time.

What Gets Cut When You Go Too Short

If you book 6 hours for a wedding that needs 8, something gets cut. Usually it's one of three things: getting-ready coverage, sunset portraits, or the end of the reception. Decide which of those you can live without — and only then consider going shorter.

The Real Question

Don't ask how many hours the venue allows. Ask: what moments do I absolutely not want to miss? Work backwards from that list.

When you reach out, share your ceremony start time and venue end time. I'll tell you exactly what coverage length I recommend for your specific day.
