How to Prepare for a Personal Branding Photo Session (Without Overthinking It)

What to wear, what to bring, what to expect — a straightforward guide to getting the most out of your personal branding photo session in Charlotte.

How to Prepare for a Personal Branding Photo Session

A branding session is different from a portrait session. You're not just trying to look good — you're building a library of images that communicate who you are professionally. Here's how to show up ready.

Define Your Brand Before the Shoot

What do you want people to feel when they see your photos? Corporate and credible? Warm and approachable? Creative and bold? Write down three words that describe your brand, and use them to guide every decision — wardrobe, location, pose, expression.

Wardrobe: Plan More Than You Think You Need

Bring 3–4 outfit changes minimum. Solid colors photograph better than busy patterns. Wear what you actually wear when meeting clients — authenticity reads on camera. Avoid anything that will be outdated in 18 months.

Location Matters

Your location should match your brand. A real estate agent might shoot at a property. A coach might choose a coffee shop. A lawyer might want a clean, neutral office environment. Think about what backgrounds will appear in your LinkedIn headshot and website hero image.

Props and Context

Props give you something to do with your hands and add context. A notebook, a laptop, a coffee cup, your product — anything that puts you in your natural professional environment. Don't force it, but don't avoid it either.

Day-of Preparation

Get a good night's sleep. Drink water. Don't try a new hairstyle the morning of. Arrive 10 minutes early to settle in. The first 10 minutes of any session are usually warm-up — by the end you'll feel natural. Trust the process.

The goal of a branding session isn't perfection — it's authenticity at its best. Come prepared, communicate your goals, and let the camera do the rest.
