12 Questions to Ask a Photographer Before You Sign the Contract

Before you sign anything, ask these 12 questions. They'll tell you everything about a photographer's professionalism, experience, and fit for your event.

12 Questions to Ask a Photographer Before You Sign the Contract

The right photographer will welcome these questions. The wrong one will deflect them. Here's what to ask.

1. Can I see a complete gallery from a similar event?

Not a highlight reel. A full gallery — every image — from a wedding, quinceañera, or session that matches the scope of yours.

2. What happens if you're sick or have an emergency on my event day?

Do they have a network of trusted backup photographers? What's the process? Is it in the contract?

3. What equipment do you carry, and do you have backup gear?

At minimum: two camera bodies, multiple lenses, external flash, and dual-card recording. No backup = no safety net.

4. How many events do you shoot in a weekend?

Some photographers double-book weekends, shooting a morning ceremony and an evening reception back-to-back. Know if this is the case for your date.

5. What is your editing style, and will it match my vision?

Ask to see unedited-to-edited comparisons. Understand whether they shoot light and airy, dark and moody, or true-to-life. Style consistency across a full gallery matters.

6. How long until I receive my photos?

Get a specific number — "4–6 weeks" is acceptable. "A few months" is not. Is rush delivery available?

7. What does your contract cover?

Read the full contract. Look for: deliverables, turnaround timeline, cancellation policy, force majeure, rescheduling terms, and usage rights.

8. Who actually shoots my event?

Some studios send associate photographers. Confirm that the person whose portfolio you reviewed is the one who shows up.

9. Do I receive a print release?

Confirm you receive a full personal-use print release for all delivered photos.

10. What is your communication process?

Response time for emails. Contact method on the event day. Who handles logistics — them or an assistant?

11. Have you shot at my venue before?

Venue familiarity helps, especially for tricky lighting conditions or unconventional spaces.

12. What do you need from me to make this day go smoothly?

Their answer reveals how organized and experienced they are. A great photographer has a clear, specific answer.
